The Foundary was created by retail visionary Danna Sanderson, to fulfill her long time dream of opening a unique store in historic downtown Sault Ste. Marie.

Danna and her husband Terry had been renovating historic properties for a few years when the old Colonial theater building came on the market. Known to locals as the former "Bookworld" building, this property was in great shape, had loads of potential and just needed some love and attention.  They purchased the building in late 2018 and renovations began in early January 2019.

Danna began traveling around the country, searching for the inventory she had envisioned for this space.  Building a store from the ground up proved to be a greater challenge than she was expecting, and it took a few months before she began to visualize the eclectic mix of products that would become the Foundary.  But once she determined the "personality" of her new store, Danna found endless sources for exactly what she was looking for.

Today, the Foundary is a totally unique mix of products, unlike anything you've ever seen.  Antique beds sit next to giant metal tuna fish sculptures, and Michigan made salsa, soaps, and candles share space with Kantha placemats and organic diaper rash cream.  It's always changing, it's always interesting and we are always very happy to have you stop by!
